The True Spirit of Lifelong Learning and Being a Scientist: Insights from Dr. Bikman

Feb 22, 2025
seeking truth may mean revising your hypothesis

A couple of times each month Dr. Bikman sets aside time for an exclusive live “cameras-on” Zoom hangout with our Pro Insiders. It’s an intimate, off-the-cuff conversation where members get to ask their most pressing questions, participate in real discussions and engage with Ben about the latest in metabolic science.

During this week’s hangout something special happened that we’d like to share.

After answering a handful of questions from the group, one of our Pro Insiders, Andrea, dropped a kind comment in the Zoom chat. She expressed appreciation for the way Ben thoughtfully listens to questions and gives genuine, measured answers—never acting like a “know-it-all.”

That compliment sparked a reflective moment from Ben, where he shared what he believes it truly means to be a scientist. He explained that a scientist is a seeker of truth. He spoke about the responsibility of approaching science with humility, acknowledging that the more we understand, the more we realize how much we don’t know.

Science is an Ongoing Process of Questioning, Testing, and Revising Hypotheses

“True science,” Ben explains, “is not about defending one’s beliefs at all costs.” He recounts a moment from his PhD training, when he had brought disappointing results to his mentor, Linus Dohm. Instead of seeing the results as a failure, his mentor reminded him that scientists are seekers of truth—if the data disproves an assumption, then the hypothesis must simply be revised. This perspective has shaped the way Ben approaches both research and conversations, always leaving room for learning and discovery.

Hearing Ben speak openly about his philosophy of science was a reminder of why these Pro Insider hangouts are so valuable. They’re not scripted, they’re not polished presentations—they’re real conversations. They’re moments where we get to see Dr. Bikman’s thought process in action and gain insights that go beyond what he shares in public interviews or presentations.

If you’ve ever wished you could sit down with Ben and ask your own questions, you can. Becoming a Pro Insider gives you access to these exclusive Zoom hangouts and many more engagement opportunities with Dr. Bikman, the Insulin IQ team, and the remarkable, engaged community of likeminded truth seekers.
